An amazing Winnipeg music that I love came down and performed last night in Annapolis called the Duhks (pronounced 'ducks'). The band's name comes from the banjoist's earlier band Scruj MacDuhk - which was also awesome. (MacDuhk was a warrior chieftain who fought with William Wallace resisting English occupation of Scotland, during the reign of King Edward I.) Dan and I drove out to see them and were not disappointed.Their sound is best described as a soul, gospel, North American folk, Brazilian samba, old time country string band, zydeco, and Irish dance music fusion. What?!! I know that is what you are thinking, how can one mix all those styles together and get anything resembling enjoyable music. Truthfully, I don't know, but they do.
The group is so captivating and energetic on stage it is almost a disappointment to listen to them recorded because it just can't do them justice. I would recommend you check them out. Their website has a couple of their music videos, my favourite is "Mountains O'Things".
Enjoy!
